The back story

My journey as a woodworker started the year after my late granddaddy Carl passed away. He left me with a ton of life lessons and a stack of quarter-sawn pine from his shop.

Granny and Granddaddy’s children and grandchildren were raised the old-fashioned way. They taught us to be curious and that hard work always matters, no matter the personal gain. Doing it right the first time was your only option. They emphasized the importance of taking time to gather together around the table for meals. Granddaddy would set the egg timer when you showered because he believed in appreciating the environment and all that you’ve been given. Above all else, they showed us how to love hard and forgive harder. I’ve spent the years since 2013 learning how to make good of the stack of wood I was given and it still sits stacked in my shop waiting for the project it was meant to be.

The Name

I’m lucky enough to travel a lot and the name Low Slung Moon was born on an airplane watching the moon rising over the horizon line. I was writing a poem at the time and described the moon that night as low slung.

Our moments fleeting, as the sun sets through broken clouds

Falling below sight each night can’t erase its light from above

Casting shadows on another slow rising

This low slung moon holds the cards, not knowing yet when to fold.

To me, one of the most precious moments in nature is when the moon crests the horizon, especially the ocean. If you’re still enough, there’s a feeling of peace at that moment as it rises, as if you’re suspended in space along with it.

I get that same feeling and moments of peace when I work with wood. As the famous George Nakashima once said, “a tree is our most intimate contact with nature.” The connection to nature and its beauty is undeniable as you scrape away its layers.

Each piece that leaves the shop has been treated as our own, curating locally sourced, high character woods, hand sanding imperfections, and laying down torch heated brands. Every project has been built with the values and principles my parents and grandparents passed down to me recognizing that each moment is a gift, no matter its difficulty.

Low Slung Moon is a vibe and there is nothing I love more than to share this journey and that vibe with all of you. Thank you for supporting this little shop.

Thoughtfully handmade,

With love,

Darby
